World’s Most Expensive Cameras

The first cameras used the daguerreotype process, pioneered by Jacques Mande Daguerre, to form images. A daguerreotype image is achieved by producing a direct image onto a polished silver surface. Unfortunately, a daguerreotypist couldn’t produce copies by means other than daguerreotyping the original and the process was obsolete within a decade.

In May 2007, a daguerreotype camera dating back to 1839 became the world’s most expensive camera when it sold at auction for €576,000—about US $775,000 at the time. The camera, designed by Frenchman Susse Freres, was housed in a sliding wooden box frame and was also believed to be the oldest commercially manufactured camera in the world, heightening its appeal to collectors.

In May 2010, another daguerreotype camera will go under the hammer and possibly become the most expensive camera in the world. Undocumented since 1839, this camera was built by Alphonse Giroux, brother-in-law to Daguerre, which may make it the oldest camera ever built. It was even signed by Dagguere, which can only increase its value to enthusiasts.

Most Expensive Cat

Is $42,000 too much to pay for a house cat? Well, various sources have reported that a London, England resident didn’t think so when she purchased her second-generation Bengal cat in 1998 for about £25,320. 

This expensive cat was listed in the Guiness’ number one spot for most expensive cat breed purchased. They aren’t normally that expensive, but they don’t come cheap. Bengals can cost anywhere from $970 – $4000. The International Cat Association, recognizes the Bengal as a pedigree of cat, however the Cat Fanciers’ Association, the largest and oldest registry of cats, does not. This is because they have ‘wild’ or ‘non-domestic’ blood in their recent heritage. The second-generation Bengal in question was reportedly a hybrid of a wild Asian leopard cat bred with a domestic one.

History:
The British colony of Guiana ran out of stamps in 1856. Awaiting a new supply from London, the governor asked the local newspaper to print a batch of 1 cent and 4 cent stamps. The stamps were printed on a rough paper in an unusual rectangular shape. In 1973 a boy discovered this stamp in his attic. It was last sold to the Dupont family in 1980 for just under USD$ 1m.

 3 Skilling Sverige
Yellow - Sweden - 1885
History:
A printing error resulted in one of the most expensive and unique stamps in the world. A 3 Skilling stamp normally printed on green paper was printed on yellow paper belonging to the 3 Skilling stamp. A schoolboy found this stamp in his grandfather's collection. There is only known to be one copy of this stamp in existence which sold for $USD 2.3m in 1996
